How are the ratings calculated?
|
|
|
The rating list is build upon a simplified version of the Elo rating system, which is widely used in chess and other games. After a tournament, new ratings for all the players are calculated using a special formula. This formula takes into consideration the players ratings before the tournament, the opposition they have faced in the tournament and the placements in each and every game played.
The formula used to calculate a player's new rating based on his/her previous one is: Rn = Ro + C * (S - Se) where:
Rn = new rating
Ro = old rating
S = score
Se = expected score
C = constant
We have transformed this formula into the table below, using 16 as the constant. From this table the players can easily see how much the ratings are changed after a single game.

Explanation
Every single game in a tournament is rated. All new players start with 1600 rating points.
Here are some examples:
You have rating 1600 and are playing A, B og C, whose ratings are 1650, 1570 og 1525 respectively. You win the game, A is 2nd, B is 3rd and C is 4th. The ratings change like this:
You win 9 rating points from A, who had 50 rating points more than you.
You win 7 rating points from B, who had 30 rating points less than you.
You win 6 rating points from C, who had 75 rating points less than you.
If you finish last, you will lose rating points to all the other players:
You lose 7 rating points to A, who had 50 rating points more than you.
You lose 9 rating points to B, who had 30 rating points less than you.
You lose 10 ratingpoeng to C, who had 75 rating points less than you.
IF C wins, you and B are tied for 2nd place og A is the loser, the ratings change like this:
You lose 10 rating points to C, who had 75 rating points less than you.s
You lose 1 rating points to B, who had 30 rating points less than you.
You win 9 rating points from A, who had 50 rating points more than you.
NB:
When calculating the ratings we always use the players' ratings from before the tournament. So the ratings don't change after each game - we sum it all up when the tournament is finished.
